Gordon L. Schroeder will join Newtek Business Services, Inc., as the company's eighth director. Schroeder, who joins Newtek as the sixth independent director on the board, comes from FISERV, Inc., where he served as executive vice president of human resources. At FISERV, he was responsible for leadership training and development, benefits, payroll, compensation, acquisition assessment, and integration. Prior to joining FISERV, he was senior vice president of global human resources and leadership development for Maritz, Inc. Newtek handles the financial, management, and technological needs of 78,000 business accounts.
Two Southern California companies save with assistance of Gevity
Gevity's HR solution has helped two Southern California companies go on saving sprees. According to James C. Pietsch, president of Interstate Rehab, LLC, of Glendale, CA, a three-year association with Gevity was instrumental in saving his business. West Coast Countertops in Temecula, CA, has been saving $200,000 annually for the last three years by making use of Gevity's HR services. Robert Botkin, chief operating officer of West Coast Countertops, commented, "Gevity is a good business partner and has taken a tremendous amount of pressure off." Gevity recently opened an office in Ontario, CA, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles.

BenefitsEssentials.com, a web-based library offering information on human resources, employee benefits, and related topics, has won the 2007 APEX Award for Publication Excellence. The BenefitsEssentials team was awarded in the "Web and Intranet Site Content and Writing" category. Parameters taken into consideration were "excellence in graphic design, editorial content, and the success of the entry in achieving overall communications effectiveness and excellence." This was the 19th annual APEX competition, and the participants included communicators working in corporate, nonprofit, and independent settings. The event was sponsored by the editors of Writing That Works, a newsletter for communicators.
