What is the role
The US Retirement Benefits role reports to the US Policy and Benefits Manager and is responsible for managing the US retirement plans, ensuring retirement benefits are fit for purpose against the US competitive market and in line with Shell global policies and in compliance with all applicable regulatory and legislative requirements.
Primary Accountabilities
Directly responsible for design of US retirement benefits.
Shared partnership in end-to-end delivery of qualified retirement plans, including all processes, systems, and operations with the Trustee Support Unit (TSU). As such, works closely with TSU to monitor and maintain awareness of all other retirement plan activities for potential impact on Plan Sponsors, plan design, and non-qualified plans. Closely monitors operations of qualified and non-qualified processes across a common delivery platform.
Directly accountable for delivering all aspects of US non-qualified benefits plans and programs, including excess plans. Duties encompass design, implementation, plan administration, compliance and communications.
Represents Plan Sponsors, Vice President - Human Resources North America (VP-HR NA), and Human Resources, and serves as primary point of contact for those entities. Also represents the VP-HR NA with respect to plan administration duties for the non-qualified plans and programs.
Provides guidance related to intent of benefits design and interpretation of qualified plan language.
In partnership with counsel, develops legal plan documents and advises on Summary Plan Descriptions and other communications.
Partners with resources shared across qualified and non-qualified arenas, including internal legal and tax professionals responsible for providing advice impacting the plans, as well as external recordkeepers and actuaries. This is to be done in seamless collaboration with the TSU to ensure aligned messaging, approach and opportunity review.
Serves as the primary HR Point of Contact for TSU
Proactively monitors and responds to legislative changes and regulatory issues impacting the plans.
Responsible for changes to retirement benefits strategy and design. Includes formulating and recommending any plan amendments and navigating related governance requirements.
Represents Shell externally with industry groups and maintains a broad, active, external network.
Monitors competitive positioning of US retirement benefits on an on-going basis.
Oversees analysis, review and report-out of US Retirement Benefit Arrangements as required by the global Country Benefits Review process (generally conducted every five years)
Serves as a global resource regarding retirement matters. Contributes to the design and development of Retirement Benefits Guidelines setting forth Shell’s global retirement strategy and policies globally.
Coordinates annual Remuneration Report disclosures for US executives.
Advises on retirement and other aspects of mergers, divestments, and acquisitions, including design and implementation of transition benefits, and communications with employees.
Provides on-going counseling for Executives regarding retirement benefits.
Responsible for vendor management and delivery against operational plan and budget
Leadership:
This role reports directly to the US Policy and Benefits Manager and serves on the US Policy and Benefits Leadership Team.
In addition, this role sits on the North America Extended HR Leadership Team. As such and at this level of the organization, is expected to be a visible, integrated leader beyond the retirement benefits remit and within the broader US HR community, including role modeling of Shell’s Core Values, some project leadership (as opportunities present) and development of others.
This role manages up to two direct reports whose remit covers the US benefits arena broadly, (including preparation of the Form 5500 for the welfare benefit plans) requiring not only leadership and development of others but full partnering with the wider benefits team on scope of work, priorities and broad development of talent.

What we need from you
Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
Minimum ten (10) years of relevant experience.
Bachelor's Degree required.
Critical Skills/Experience
Seasoned HR professional with significant participant-facing experience via one-on-one interaction with current and former employees.
In-depth experience with defined benefit, defined contribution, and deferred compensation and other non-qualified benefits.
In-depth knowledge and demonstrated ability to apply concepts in the areas of finance, legal (primarily ERISA), taxation, and retirement readiness.
Presence, demonstrated experience and technical expertise necessary to effectively advise Executives regarding retirement benefits.
Complex project management with multiple stakeholders.
Ability to understand the complex, and to make the complex simple and clear for those less familiar to understand.
Keen understanding of role clarity, including the interplay of roles related to qualified and non-qualified benefits given common delivery platforms and the variety of stakeholders/roles. This includes a demonstrated ability to effectively and proactively partner with others at varying roles and levels.
