This position performs administrative activities in PaleoServices and provides assistance to the Director of PaleoServices and the BRCC Contract Manager.

Administrative Assistant Job Responsibilities:

Providing administrative support to ensure efficient operation of DPS.

Preparing and submitting initial compliance documents to lead agencies.

Coordinating submittal of various monthly updates and progress reports to clients.

Calculating mileage reimbursements and per diem for billing purposes and adding to contract balance spreadsheets for invoicing.

Compiling information on fossil preparation and curation hours/budgets and distributing to staff.

Tracking records search requests and other one-time invoicing projects and ensuring that invoices are prepared and submitted to clients.

Scheduling regular Departmental meetings and taking meeting notes on an as-needed basis.

Maintaining and updating guest list for annual PaleoServices Open House, overseeing preparation of guest invitations, and coordination of Open House event with Special Events staff and vendors.

Preparing/reviewing/submitting Departmental purchase requests and coding.

Maintaining supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed supplies, placing and expediting orders for supplies.

Administrative Assistant Skills and Qualifications:

At least 1 year of administrative experience, including reporting, writing, process management skills. The cover letter should clearly articulate this experience.

Cafe Attendant (Part - Time, Regular)

The San Diego Natural History Museum is seeking enthusiastic and friendly part time Café Attendants to assist guests at our Cafe. The Café Attendant provides Museum guests an unparalleled customer service experience in a fast-paced, educational and entertaining environment. The ideal candidates will be comfortable shifting roles and responsibilities throughout the day while continually maintaining a pleasant and professional demeanor.

This position requires Saturday and Sunday availability.

Holidays and some evenings are required.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide consistent and excellent customer service to visitors, members, and staff.

Prepare and serve food, beverages and snacks. This includes operating a traditional expresso machine.

Assist in the kitchen, as needed, in the preparation of food according to the instructed recipe, as well as packaging and labeling of items for sale.

Campaign Manager (Full - Time, Temporary)

The Campaign Manager works closely with the VP of Institutional Advancement to keep the Nat’s 150

th

anniversary capital campaign on schedule and progressing with a high level of visibility and momentum that engenders a sense of excitement, optimism and confidence in achieving the campaign goal.

General

Manage the master campaign calendar

Provide clear lines of communication with all other museum departments.

Administer the campaign budget.

Prepare regular reports on campaign progress for staff, volunteers, and board.

Manage campaign record keeping, including database (Altru) and electronic files.

Oversee the preparation and distribution of printed and electronic campaign materials and information.

Coordinate all volunteer campaign committee meetings and activities.

Coordinator, People and Culture (Full - Time, Regular)

The People and Culture Coordinator provides a wide variety of Human Resources-related support including but not limited to onboarding for new employees, compiling and updating employee records, assisting in recruitment efforts by maintaining up to date job descriptions, posting job ads, screening candidates, coordinating interviews and new hire documents and processes. Responsible for accurate data entry to the payroll systems (and other platforms) and assist with payroll and benefit administration. Works under general supervision with routine activities and when following established policies and procedures. Receives more detailed instruction on new assignments and issues of complex nature. The People and Culture Coordinator reports to the Senior Director of Human Resources.

Essential Functions

Education Specialist (Full-Time, Regular)

The Education Specialist is an integral part of The Nat’s Education Department. This position manages the Nature to You (NTY) loan program; develops and implements curriculum for both in-person and virtual programs. The Specialist will develop educator guides based on The Nat exhibits; develop curriculum kits; oversee Storytime program; and collaborate on monthly distance programs. The Education Specialist will also work with the Senior Manager of Education to implement and support The Nat’s summer camp offerings. This position reports to the Senior Education Manager.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manage all operations and procedures of the Nature to You Loan program to include processing loans and memberships, care and repair, marketing and public tours.

Work with the Development Team to develop proposals and reports for funding, including grants, foundation, and sponsorship materials. Meet with current or prospective donors as needed.

Develop, create, implement and evaluate NGSS aligned curriculum for teacher kits, teacher guides and summer camp.

Collaborate with education team to plan, develop and implement distance learning (virtual) programs.

Coordinate and lead the monthly Nature & Me Storytime program.

Support and coordinate summer camp program, including but not limited to staffing, programming and ensuring the best camper experience.

Conduct and administer the summer camp scholarship program.

Represent Education Department at monthly Balboa Park Educators Council (BPEC) meetings.

Exhibit Designer (Full - Time, Regular)

Reporting to the Director of Experience Design, the Exhibition Designer will be responsible for the production of schematic, conceptual and final design CAD drawings that support the content and messaging of visitor centered exhibitions. The Exhibition Designer also works closely with staff in Exhibits and Marketing to generate and present graphics as the lead for exhibit graphics design. This individual will also coordinate and support exhibit fabrication, installation and remedial work.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supports the Director of Experience Design in strategic and vision activities in collaboration with Exhibits staff to help determine and evaluate exhibit themes, target audiences, and planned location of exhibits.

Act as lead designer on exhibition graphics, work with the Content Developer and Marketing Department to design and produce delegated exhibition graphics.

Work with the Exhibit Content Developer to generate and evaluate designs in support of the exhibition content, main ideas, messaging, and stories.

Oversee and communicate the production schedule for exhibit elements, graphics, and the exhibit installation.

Prepare conceptual, schematic and final drawings for future exhibits, working closely with the Exhibits Team to determine general look and feel, materials and finishes through to detailed construction drawings.

Design exhibition floor plans, furniture, components, and interactives in compliance with ADA and building code best practices.

Produce 3D renderings and scale models to be used as collaborative spatial planning tools to help provide a common vision to guide final designs.

Create deliverables for presentations to exhibitions team, Executive Management, and other project stakeholders.

Work with the Director of Experience Design, Exhibits Fabricator, and Exhibit Project Coordinator to develop and manage exhibition budgets, installation schedules, and tracking project progress.

Produce detailed dimensioned drawings for individual exhibit components such as exhibit display cases, interactives and themed elements.

Work closely with the Exhibit Fabricator to determine best materials and methods of fabrication and prototypes.

Help procure materials and coordinate work with outside vendors and contractors for exhibitions.

Work with the Exhibit Maintenance Technician to resolve and implement remedial & maintenance modifications to exhibit elements.

Oversee and participate in the installation of exhibitions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of exhibition development, design, fabrication, and installation best practices.

Broad set of design skills to select exhibit color palettes, furniture, materials and finishes

Exhibit Technician (Part - Time, Temporary)

Reporting to the Director of Experience Design, the Exhibition Technician is a temporary position (

October 2021 through April 2022)

that will support preparation, fabrication and installation for exhibitions at the San Diego Natural History Museum, including a new exhibit focusing on the Baja California Peninsula. The position will work closely with all members of the exhibits team and other departments as needed.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Prepare gallery spaces for new exhibitions by safe and careful removal of old exhibit elements and temporary partition walls.

Prepare wall surfaces and paint gallery walls. Repair or replace baseboards and restore flooring as needed.

Help fabricate, install and paint new temporary gallery partition walls and other large exhibition architectural features.

Fabricate, assemble and install a wide variety of individual exhibit components such as pedestals, display decks, dioramas, exhibit cases and interactive exhibits.

Work closely with the exhibits team to help fabricate exhibit elements including realistic sculpted models and other larger thematic props.

Be able to help securely install floor, wall or ceiling mounted objects utilizing a wide variety of hardware and tools.

Safely load and unload deliveries of exhibit materials from trucks at Museum loading dock or help deliver or retrieve items from storage at the Museum’s offsite warehouse.

Occasionally help with general exhibit projects and maintenance in existing exhibition galleries.

Work with Exhibits staff to resolve and implement remedial & maintenance modifications to exhibit elements.

Oversee and participate in the installation of exhibitions.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Proven experience with Museum or Gallery exhibits fabrication and installation including object handling and mounting techniques.

Working knowledge of safe power tool operation and work place safety procedures.

General computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office software.

Be capable of long periods of physical work occasionally lifting up to 50lbs and ability to perform work from ladders and or scissor lift platform.

Have a current California driver’s license, clean driving record and the ability (or willingness to be trained) to operate a scissor lift work platform.

Lead Educator (Full-Time, Regular)

The Lead Educator directs natural science classes for grades 4-8 for participants in the School in the Park (SITP) program. This unique program funded by Price Philanthropies will provide weeklong science education experiences to select area students.

The Lead Educator will also be responsible for driving the development of youth and community based outdoor curriculum and programming. This includes overseeing the Museum’s Outdoor Access Fund programs, working with education team and volunteers. This position reports to the Senior Education Manager.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serve as lead educator for School in the Park program and collaboratively teach with Museum Educator & Program Coordinator.

Work collaboratively with School in the Park staff to address the goals and needs of the students and program.

Supervise the Museum Educator & Program Coordinator: oversee plan of work, assign duties, and approve time sheet.

Adhere to both SITP and Museum policy and procedure to include the education department’s standard operating procedures and behavior management policy. Keep up to date with proficiency in classroom technologies to align with SITP initiatives.

Work with the volunteer group The Canyoneers

to manage the school-based hiking program, Outdoor Access Fund

. Develop new content for hikes and facilitate trainings.

Develop outdoor/environmental education curriculum.

Support summer camp program leading up to its start in June with curriculum develop and training. Teach summer camps.

Evaluate curriculum and work with stakeholders, Museum educators and teachers to get feedback.

Museum Educator (Part - Time, Regular)

The Museum Educator coordinates and facilitates programs utilizing the Museum’s exhibits and collections to ensure that guests, families and school groups have an exceptional experience. We aim to foster curiosity and a love and respect of the natural world. We use an inquiry-based approach while following current science standards. The Museum Educator must represent the San Diego Natural History Museum (The Nat) while providing an engaging learning environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Honor and uphold The Nat’s mission statement, policies and expectations.

Facilitate youth programs including camps, classes, workshops, tours, and drop-in activities.

Manage both large and small groups of students in a classroom, in museum exhibits, and outdoors.

Perform daily functions associated with the summer programming (40 hour per week during the month of July).

Provide a secure, safe, and supportive atmosphere for program participants.

Organize and conduct innovative educational programs and workshops for museum visitors.

Prepare and organize program spaces and materials.

Support and communicate with staff and volunteers.

Field monitoring of active mass grading, trenching, and other excavation activities into potentially fossil-bearing sedimentary rocks (Cenozoic and upper Mesozoic marine and/or non-marine rock units) in the greater southern California region.

Field monitor will work in close proximity to heavy equipment and be expected to work safely, to collect unearthed fossils, and to record relevant stratigraphic and taphonomic data.

Field monitoring can include working at distant locations for a week at a time, with commensurate reimbursement of per diem and mileage.

Opportunities for field survey work and fossil preparation are also possible.

Scheduled work hours are typically between the hours of 7 am to 3 pm Monday through Friday; however, work may also occur at night or on weekends.

Qualifications:

A minimum of a B.S. in Geology or a related discipline with an emphasis in paleontology.

Experience in field paleontology and stratigraphy is preferred.

Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs

Have a valid Driver’s License and a clean driving record.

Paleontology Apprentice (Part - Time, Temporary)

Applications are invited for four (4) paid undergraduate student positions in the Department of Paleontology at the San Diego Natural History Museum (The Nat). This is the third year of this immersive apprenticeship program to provide students with Museum-based experience in fossil preparation, identification, and curation.

Objectives & Duties:

Specific fossil preparation tasks to be taught will include mechanical preparation of invertebrate and vertebrate fossils using static hand tools and pneumatic tools; wet screening of sediment samples to concentrate micro-invertebrate and micro-vertebrate fossils; consolidation of fossils using various chemical consolidants; and construction of fiberglass-reinforced plaster support cradles for vertebrate fossils.

Specific curation tasks to be taught will include: microscopic “picking” of wet-screened sediment concentrate for micro-invertebrate and micro-vertebrate fossils; general sorting and taxonomic identification of invertebrate and vertebrate fossils; organizing sorted fossils into individual species lots and placing in archival specimen trays, plastic vials, glass vials, and/or gel capsules; entering collection locality and specimen identification information into the SDNHM Paleontology Collection Database; writing locality and specimen tracking numbers on catalogued fossils; placing organized, trayed, catalogued, and numbered fossils into steel drawers and storage cabinets in The Nat Paleontology Collection.

Examples of fossil specimen projects to be worked on as part of the internship include: late Pleistocene terrestrial and marine microvertebrate fossils from coastal southern California; early and middle Pleistocene terrestrial macrovertebrate fossils from inland southern California; late Pliocene and late Miocene marine invertebrate and vertebrate fossils from coastal and inland southern California; middle Miocene terrestrial vertebrates from coastal southern California; middle Eocene terrestrial vertebrate fossils from coastal southern California; and late Cretaceous marine invertebrate fossils from coastal southern California.

Schedule:

The apprenticeship program will involve up to 12 hours of work per week over a total period of 20 (twenty) weeks (September 2021 through January 2022). Compensation will be $16.00 per hour.

Qualifications:

To be considered for this position, applicants must be full-time students in the final two years of an earth science undergraduate degree program (or equivalent).

Security Officer (Part-Time, Regular)

The San Diego Natural History Museum is seeking intuitive, reliable, attentive, detail-oriented individuals with strong communication and customer service skills as part-time/as-needed Security Officers. Security Officers are expected to uphold Museum rules and regulations by patrolling, observing, and reporting to the Facilities Supervisor and Senior Director of Operations. Security Officers are also expected to set the example for Museum safety and stellar customer service, and assist Museum guests, employees, and vendors during emergency situations.

Areas of responsibilities include:

Patrol, observe, and report to Facilities Supervisor and Senior Director of Operations.

Provide a high level of customer service and assistance to all Museum guests, staff, volunteers, and vendors.

Maintain a strong working knowledge of Museum policies and procedures, enforcing them with guests, staff, volunteers, and vendors as needed.

Document daily actions and situations in a Daily Log.

Respond to complaints and/or requests for assistance and evaluate appropriate course of action.

Respond to emergency situations within and directly outside Museum (i.e. natural disasters, medical emergencies, etc.)

Assist with building access and receiving/deliveries.

Perform other duties assigned by Facilities Supervisor and Senior Director of Operations.

Qualifications:

Previous security experience at a cultural institution is preferred

Excellent customer service skills with the ability to maintain a professional and calm demeanor in a challenging, dynamic environment with all types of guests, staff, volunteers, and vendors.

Strong communication skills with attention to detail.

Must be able stand for long periods of time, respond quickly and communicate verbally for the majority of each shift.

Ability to perform crowd control by providing clear guidance and direction

Current Guard Card certification through BSIS

Current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification

Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.

Bilingual preferred

Science Communications Manager (Full - Time, Regular)

The San Diego Natural History Museum is seeking a Science Communications Manager that will bolster our mission to preserve nature and biodiversity in this amazing place we call home.

This is a brand-new position at the Museum and part of our strategic plan to lead with our science—science we’ve been doing for nearly 150 years. The role will grow and build upon existing communications efforts to raise awareness of the museum’s conservation and research work; generate participation in community science and environmental education programs; and get people excited to learn about and protect this unique region.

Part field reporter, part science writer, part publicist, the Science Communications Manager will develop content for various communications channels, manage campaigns around community science events, and assist with media announcements around research papers or discoveries. This is a mid-level role that is a key part of the museum’s content/PR team (currently two people).

Your Day-to-Day Work

Assist with development of annual content strategy and identify opportunities for communications campaigns and news stories. The role will follow the direction of The Nat’s strategic plan and editorial vision, which includes but is not limited to showcasing the unique biodiversity of our region, demonstrating how people can support wildlife, sharing practical applications of the museum's research, and addressing current issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental equity.

Take complex concepts and develop them into accessible and compelling stories across a variety of media and platforms, including but not limited to blogs, web pages, enewsletters, social media posts, videos, and media pitches. The stories will be scientifically accurate and grounded in fact, but may be playful or moving as the subject matter requires.

Generate media coverage for the research and conservation work of museum staff by developing and maintaining strong working relationship with key science reporters, and writing press materials, pitching media, and serving as a media liaison.

Write and project-manage email newsletters focused on outdoor programs and science news.

Plan and execute communications and marketing plans for community science programs like Healthy Canyons and City Nature Challenge and other key projects such as Canyoneer hikes.

Serve as one of several copy-editors for all museum communications.

Plan, organize, coordinate, and report on multiple projects, often under tight time constraints.

What You Bring

You’ll need to be adept at taking complex scientific concepts and making them accessible to diverse audiences with varying levels of knowledge about natural history. You’ll love to dig deep, ask questions, look past the obvious, and find new ways to engage and connect with people and stimulate their curiosity, because that’s at the core of what we do. You’ll be science pro with great communications chops, or be a fabulous communicator/marketer with a robust understanding of science.

Superior creative writing and storytelling skills, with a mastery of AP style; demonstrated success in writing materials that are equally compelling in long formats (e.g. a press release or blog) as they are in short formats (e.g. a Tweet or short video).

2 years of experience in science communications, environmental education, outreach, or a related field preferred.

Knowledge of our region’s unique biodiversity, wildlife conservation, and local environmental organizations.

Strong understanding of social media platforms, trends, and opportunities.

Experience developing and publishing web content using CMS systems and email marketing platforms; UI/UX knowledge and video editing experience a plus. Adept at Microsoft Office suite.

Collegial, and able to communicate clearly, concisely, and diplomatically in written and spoken language with a wide range of people.

Able to prioritize, manage-up, and adhere to deadlines and keep track of multiple projects simultaneously, toggling between big picture strategic work and smaller projects w/ quick turnarounds.  

Bachelor’s degree preferred (e.g., B.S. in biology, environmental science, or geological sciences, or B.A. in communications, journalism, or marketing)

Fluency in a foreign language, e.g. Spanish, a plus in order to connect to our region’s diverse communities.

The Science Communications Manager will report to the Senior Director of Communications, collaborate closely with the Digital Communications Manager, and partner with many internal departments, including Research, Education and Engagement, and Development.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position with benefits such as health insurance, vacation, 14 paid holidays, free admission into all of Balboa Park’s museums, and more.
