A Day in the Life
This role will serve as the primary Employee Relations (ER) contact for our Manufacturing & Corporate sites based in Quebec, and occasionally support the Senior ER Partner with additional ER mandates with Commercial client groups. The ER Specialist partners directly with leaders, managers and employees to provide advice and coach both parties on all employee relations issues including guidance on performance management, disciplinary processes, restructuring activity, legal issues, investigations, conflict management, COVID response, etc. The Specialist will ensure a fair and consistent application of Medtronic's policies and procedures, while identifying opportunities to proactively promote a positive working culture/environment.
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
Counsels and provides partnership to employees and all levels of management across the full spectrum of employee relations matters in alignment with our practices, policies, and local labor legislation.
This work includes proactive workplace initiatives and strategies; workplace investigations and internal reviews; performance improvement and discipline processes; end of employment/restructuring; labor relations; crisis management; and, general employee relations coaching and conflict resolution.
Develops and leads proactive employee and labor relations strategies to contribute to a positive work environment by leveraging data, addressing areas of opportunity and minimizing risk.
Plays key leadership role in restructuring initiatives, resulting in employee transitions.
Provides proactive recommendations on employee relations strategies and solutions; develops processes and programs to progress development of the employee relations function.
Identifies trends in employment practices and advises on appropriate proactive action and training opportunities.
Provide counsel and facilitate prompt and effective resolution of workplace conflicts and address issues for employees, managers, and leaders in a manner consistent with Medtronic policies, practices and legal considerations. Apply various conflict resolution techniques, including training, mediation, conflict coaching, etc.
Drive the coordination and execution of reductions in force by consulting/partnering with the Senior ER Partner, Business Managers, HR Business Partners (HRBPs), Legal, Finance and Security.
Ensure regular communication with Senior ER Partner ensuring alignment in approach and escalating ER concerns promptly.
Partner with Senior ER Partner and/or Legal counsel in conducting investigations, research policies/practices, create and gather documentation, make recommendations and implement resolutions when applicable.
Work in partnership with the Senior ER Partner and local HRBPs to develop and/or deploy proactive ER strategies.
Act as the primary contact for any ER based inquiries made by the Quebec Labour Board and compile necessary documentation required for mediations and/or legal proceedings.
Where necessary support the exit management process, by coordinating/conducting severance analysis, legal review, training, scheduling, notifications, communications, and transition plans.
Maintain strict confidentiality throughout conversations and investigations. Manage highly confidential HR-related information, exercising sound judgement/discretion with confidential data and situations, ensuring timely and accurate documentation of outcomes.
Participate in the identification of employee relations trends and partner on identifying solutions and building manager skills, validating results/findings with local HRBPs and site leadership.
Partner with HRBPs and other HR functions, to ensure a high level of employee satisfaction & engagement and appropriately plan, facilitate and monitor employee programs.
Where necessary, effectively navigate a highly matrix environment ensuring alignment, regular communication and follow-up with multiple stakeholders as required.
Adapt schedule on short notice to be onsite if urgent situation warrants onsite presence.
Will occasionally be required to work flex hours in order to deliver ER services.
Balance onsite presence between Corporate & Manufacturing sites, based on case load and business requirements.
Develop strong business acumen while maintaining objectivity in work.
Responsible for reporting complaints and Adverse Drug Reactions (ADR).
**Must Have: Minimum Requirements**
A Bachelors degree is required
Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with 0 years of experience.
0-3 years of HR related experience required.
Ability to communicate effectively (oral/written) in French and English.
Ability to engage with stakeholders.
Ability to prioritize and manage competing demands and expectations.
Ability to demonstrate tact and discretion/confidentiality.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
**Nice to Have**
Knowledge of Quebec labour laws and regulations as it pertains to termination, meditation/reinstatement, accommodation and psychological harassment.
Knowledge of fundamental HR practices relating to talent acquisition, attendance, terminations, etc.
A university degree in a related discipline (Human Resources, Industrial Relations, etc.)
CHRL/CRHA designation is an asset.
Experience providing HR support in either a corporate and/or manufacturing site
Experience supporting non-compliant leaves, accommodations, performance management (including Performance Improvement Plans and Coaching plans), and/or policy interpretation.
Experience with supporting employee investigations/claims of harassment/discrimination, etc.
Experience interpreting and reviewing HR policies and procedures as well as, federal/provincial legislation.
Experience working with the Quebec Labour Board and other government entities
